Many moons ago, during the war (for any Only Fools & Horses fans out there), I stumbled across YouTubers living a zero waste & Plastic Free life. I fell in love and for a snippet of time, I too delved into their world. A teeny, tiny, little bit.
But the whole world of consumption sucked me back in. The consumption life seemed easier because I felt less guilt living it. It also seemed less expensive....
Those feelings though were purely my own because I forgot the whole purpose of Zero waste & Plastic free. I forgot that the whole point of it is to not add to the problem. I felt just as guilty about taking water from the tap and putting into a plastic water bottle as I would have getting a bottle of water from the shop.
My mind told me that in order to be ZW (Zero Waste) & PF (Plastic Free) I needed to use glass, bamboo or metal. I believed I wouldn't be able to boast about my wins while I was using plastic.
What I failed to realise was that, using that plastic water bottle until it broke was making more of a difference than throwing away a perfectly good bottle to get one made of glass, bamboo or metal.
So this time around I'm changing my thinking. I will seek advise and inspiration when I need to, but until then I will just do something, because something is better than nothing.
During my first attempt, I ordered a shampoo & condition bar from an online store. My hair hated them. So I went back to the bottles. Last year though, I decided to give XHC's Shampoo & conditioner bar a try and I really did love them. But I need a separate conditioner. My hair needs it.
The other week I popped into Poundland and saw the bars for £1* and thought I'd grab a couple of bars. I was coming to an end of my bottles so they were needed. But when I saw the no rinse conditioner for £1.25* I did an internal happy dance.
Unlike the bar, the packaging isn't plastic free. Surprisingly to myself after just checking the bottle only the cap can be recycled. BUT it does cut down on water consumption. And as someone who uses coconut oil on her hair once a week, the thought of having a leave-in conditioner in my hair, sounds like a blessing because I have this 1 chunk that knots up like it's life depends on it.
For this little test, I will also refrain from the hair oil to give it the good ol' college try!
Thoughts:
I've been using this little combo for a couple of weeks. That's 4 washes in total. Last night was the first time I've used an hair oil. It was needed. Which in my eyes is good because my hair has been needing a hair oil treatment weekly for months/years.
It took a little trial and error with the conditioner, but I think I've mastered the art of less is more with this one. I don't have to slop it on my hair live normal conditioners and it's been lasting Sat-Wed and Wed-Sat.
Provided I don't put too much on, it's not greasy or heavy and I'm loving actually doing this swap from your normal shampoo & conditioners. It's not like I'm just saying this either because it fits my current life narrative either because I've used the bars before and loved them.
After letting the shower drench my hair I've been rubbing the bar against my roots and getting an amazing lather. Then with my fingers I give it a good old scrub around the scalp & rinse then repeat.
I continue my shower routine after my second wash & then after my shower is complete the shower goes off I use a small amount through my ends and then swipe the remnants further up the top to loose the dryness but avoid the heavy greasy look.... does that make sense?
Then after a quick brush through I squeeze out the remaining water and my hair is done!
The Hydrating Coconut fragrance hasn't got a strong output of smell but it smells clean & fresh. The brand also offer it in Nourishing Papaya & Soothing Banana.
Both of which I hop to try in the future.
